    Description

VERY EARLY Patented Antique Victorian Apple Peeler, Goodell Co., Antrim, N.H.
    D
    ESCRIPTION:
Scans show it all.....a very early and scarce antique Victorian apple peeler/parer. PATENTED IN 1898, ONE OF THE VERY EARLY AUTOMATIC APPLE PEELERS EVER INVENTED!!! Made during the Spanish American War.
Nice early iron machine generally, with an interesting design. VERY INGENIOUS OPERATION. Cast in it, in large letters as shown, is "Made by Goodell Co. Antrim, N.H. and, Patent  May24, 1898".
It works by turning a crank, through 5 geared wheels and a crank. There is a metal 3-pronged "spear" where the apple is skewered to hold it in position; the apple turns as the crank revolves. There is a replaceable blade on a springed arm that also turns following the contour of the apple, cutting off the peel. These peelers actually were designed quite efficiently, especially for such an early machine. This one is in excellent condition and complete. It appears to work and possibly could still be used today. It even has the springs that help control the cutting blade and the original blade. Also has the original thumbed screw on the bottom bar that tightens it to a table or bench to stabilize it.
Sold primarily as a decorator, and it would make a great kitchen or family room item. But, I believe it could also be used.
Main wheel is 4" diameter. Measures about 11" x 7"  x 4". Crank is 2 " long. It can mount vertically or horizontally. IN EXCELLENT CONDITION !! HAS NICE ORIGINAL AGED PATINA. Again, makes a wonderful period decorator for the kitchen or other rooms.
You don't see this type of early machine very often in such complete condition, ESPECIALLY A MARKED AND SUCH A NICE EARLY DATED ONE. THIS IS AS NICE AN ANTIQUE APPLE PEELER AS YOU WILL FIND.
Nice early item from an old Massachusetts estate. A great early kitchen and unique novelty item. GET THE APPLES READY !!!
