    ANTIQUE PRIMITIVE SALT GLAZED STONEWARE CROCK
    MADE BY COWDEN & WILCOX POTTERY
    HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA
    1860 - 1887
    Antique salt glazed two gallon size jug made by legendary partners, Cowden & Wilcox, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 1860 - 1887.
    John Cowden opened the pottery in Harrisburg in 1860 and shortly thereafter, partnered with Isaac Wilcox to operate arguably the most successful pottery in Central Pennsylvania in the 1800's. The partners employed fine artisans who turned our beautiful stoneware revered by collectors.
    This is a one gallon size jug made by the partners by the partners in Harrisburg. The jug features this graduated flower blossom
    emanating
    from it's leafy stem. The work was done in blue cobalt glaze by hand and brush.
    Above the flower is the makers stamp, washed in blue as well. The makers stamp reads;
    COWDEN & WILCOX.
    HARRISBURG PA.
    There is a sturdy strap handle which has embellishments of blue cobalt on the terminals. The jug is 11" tall and 7 1/2" wide. This jug has a thick coat of salt glaze which shows accumulation on the surface. There is no damage to the jug, in excellent condition.
